Once a year, on the full-moon night of Kartik, the Manipuri villages of Kamalganj in Moulvibazar stay awake until dawn. Under a decorated mandap, dancers in stiff, mirror-studded Kumin skirts and translucent veils re-tell the love of Radha and Krishna in a form of classical dance that has been carried across the hills from Manipur and kept alive in Bangladesh since 1842. This is the Maha Raas Leela - not a staged show for visitors, but the most important religious and cultural night of the year for the Bishnupriya and Meitei Manipuri communities.
