Once a year, on the full-moon night of Kartik, the Manipuri villages of Kamalganj in Moulvibazar stay awake until dawn. Under a decorated mandap, dancers in stiff, mirror-studded Kumin skirts and translucent veils re-tell the love of Radha and Krishna in a form of classical dance that has been carried across the hills from Manipur and kept alive in Bangladesh since 1842. This is the Maha Raas Leela - not a staged show for visitors, but the most important religious and cultural night of the year for the Bishnupriya and Meitei Manipuri communities. There is a way of seeing Bangladesh that no road can give you. Roughly 700 rivers run through this country, the monsoon floods a third of it every year, and in the north-east the water gathers into haors - vast seasonal freshwater wetlands that swell into inland seas each summer and shrink back to grassland each winter. This 7-day journey is built entirely around water. You travel by wooden paddle boat, local engine boat, houseboat, overnight river vessel, hand-rowed country boat, forest boat and speedboat, and each one belongs to the water it was built for. Between them they take you from the swamp forests below the Meghalaya hills to the mangrove channels where the Ganges finally reaches the sea.

This is the route that crosses Bangladesh diagonally, from the tea hills of the north-east to the far south-eastern coast, and it does most of it by train. Bangladesh Railway is the best seat in the country: you travel at eye level through paddy, jackfruit villages, level crossings and tea estates, with tea sellers coming down the aisle, and you arrive in the middle of town instead of on a bypass. Over eight days you move from Sreemangal, where 150-year-old tea gardens run up against a rainforest full of hoolock gibbons, to Chittagong, a Mughal and colonial port city on the Karnaphuli, to Bandarban in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where eleven indigenous peoples live in hill villages above the Sangu river, and finally to Cox's Bazar and 120 unbroken kilometres of beach.
